Python Data Structures

Introduction:

Python has a variety of built-in data structures, which are used to organize and store data. Some common data structures in Python include:

  • Lists: Lists are ordered collections of items that can be of any data type. They are defined using square brackets [ ] and items are separated by commas. Lists are mutable, which means that items can be added, removed, or modified.
  • Tuples: Tuples are similar to lists, but they are immutable, which means that items cannot be added, removed, or modified. They are defined using parentheses ( ) and items are separated by commas.
  • Dictionaries: Dictionaries are unordered collections of key-value pairs. They are defined using curly braces { } and items are separated by colons. Dictionaries are mutable, which means that key-value pairs can be added, removed, or modified.
  • Strings: Strings are sequences of characters. They are defined using single or double quotes. They are immutable, which means that characters cannot be added, removed, or modified.
  • Sets: Sets are unordered collections of unique items. They are defined using curly braces { } and items are separated by commas. Sets are mutable, which means that items can be added, removed, or modified.

Each data structure has its own specific use case and it’s important to choose the right one for the task at hand. For example, Lists are great for storing items of different data types, while Tuples are great for storing items of similar data types. Dictionaries are great for storing key-value pairs and Sets are great for storing unique items. Strings are great for storing text data.

It’s also important to note that, Python also provides advanced data structures like deque, namedtuple and more which can be used for specific purposes.
